Las Vegas Traffic Tickets: The Real Truth

No question that getting a traffic ticket is a pain and if you're in Las Vegas long enough, chances are you've received a ticket.

Sadly...most people think they should just pay the fine or do traffic school and make the ticket go away.

But just paying the fine or doing traffic school can end up hurting your driving record and cost you  in increased insurance rates and court fines.

Here, we give you the real truth about getting a Las Vegas traffic ticket.

What Do I Do If I Receive A Traffic Ticket In Las Vegas?

You have to first decide whether you want to appear at court or hire a traffic ticket attorney to appear for you.

Once you decide whether to go it alone or hire a traffic lawyer, when you make your first court appearance you need to enter a plea.

Essentially, you have to decide whether you want to plead guilty, no contest or not guilty to your Las Vegas  Ticket.

If you hire a lawyer, the lawyer will most likely work out a deal with the prosecutor so that you plead no contest to a lower charge such as illegal parking which is a non-moving violation and carries no points against your driving record.

What Happens If I Ignore My Traffic Ticket?

If you forget your Court date or simply ignore your ticket, the Court will not just forget about it.

Instead, the court will issue a bench warrant for your arrest.

Not only could you be arrested if you are pulled over, having a bench warrant drastically increases the fines and fees associated with your Las Vegas traffic ticket.

What Will Happen To My Driving Record If I Receive A Ticket In Las Vegas?

If you plead guilty or no contest to your ticket, you may face having “points against your driving record.

Nevada used a demerit point system for every traffic ticket conviction.

The more serious the violation the higher the number of points. If you receive enough demerit points, 12 or more, your driver’s license could be suspended.

Las Vegas Speeding Tickets generally follow this point structure:

Speeding over the limit by:

1 to 10 MPH: 1 point
11 to 20 MPH: 2 points
21 to 30 MPH: 3 points
31 to 40 MPH: 4 points
41 MPH or more: 5 points

Will I Have To Go To Traffic School If I Receive A Ticket In Las Vegas?

Whether or not you go to traffic school will depend upon the Court in which your citation was issued and your prior driving history.

In some Las Vegas Courts, traffic school is required.

Some Courts will allow you to “buy out of traffic school” which means that instead of attending traffic school you can pay a higher fine.

Also, if you are a repeat offender, you have received multiple tickets in the same calendar year, there is a good chance you will be required to take traffic school.

What Does It Cost If I Receive A Traffic Ticket In Las Vegas?

The fine associated with your ticket should be listed on the ticket as your “bail amount.”

This is the fine that the Court is asking you to pay.

Fines vary across the state depending on the court issuing your ticket and the driver circumstances.

If you hire an attorney to help you with your Las Vegas Ticket, you will also have to pay the attorney a small fee to handle the ticket.

If you attend traffic school, you will need to pay for that as well.
